What Makes a High Performance Window

Join NYPH in learing about the science of what makes a high-performance window and its role in achieving the passive house standard. We'll review the five core Passive House principles—including airtightness, thermal bridge-free connections, and high-performance glazing—and how these principles are integrated into modern window manufacturing to enhance long-term building durability.

The course will examine how windows account for approximately 25–30% of a building's heating and cooling energy use and understand how high-performance systems can reduce total energy loss by over 50%. The presentation will detail the technical specifications of UPVC extrusions, such as thermal layers, AW60 steel reinforcement for structural stability in buildings up to 20 stories, and the performance of triple-pane IGUs with Ug values as low as .094 Btu/hr·ft²·F. Participants will review industry standards for air infiltration (less than 0.01 cfm/ft²) and water penetration resistance (up to 12 psf), focusing on how multi-point locking systems and weldable TPE gaskets ensure continuous seals and prevent energy-draining air leaks.
